CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced today that the program has signed Dean Harpe, a 2017 NJCAA First-Team All-American from Mesa Community College.
A native of Payson, Arizona, Harpe helped lead his team to the NJCAA DII National Championship by finishing fifth with rounds of 73-72-74-70. He was also named to the 2017 NJCAA All-Tournament Team.
"We are very excited to officially welcome Dean to the Saluki family," Fetcho said. "I believe his experience of helping lead a team to a National Championship will be huge for our program. Dean has the ability and the work ethic to step right in and make an immediate contribution to our program. He is a good ball-striker and handles his emotions very well, and with his drive to get better, he has the ability to be a big part of the Saluki Golf future."
Harpe is currently ranked as the No. 3 JUCO player in the country with a 71.86 scoring average, and won three events last season, including the NJCAA Arizona DII Regional. In 2016, he was an NAIA Third-Team All-American for Arizona Christian University. In 2015, he won the Arizona Division III High School state championship.
The Salukis will return three of their top four stroke-average leaders next season, plus the roster will be bolstered by the addition of three talented juco players — Harpe, Hunter York and Ollie White.
"Dean is now the 3rd JUCO All-American that we have added to our program for next year," Fetcho said. "We have a strong nucleus of players returning from last year and I believe that the future looks very bright for the Salukis. I can't wait for everyone to get on campus in August and for us to get the season started."
