Southern Illinois starting pitcher Chad Whitmer was selected in the 10th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees. Whitmer was the 302nd overall selection in the draft. Whitmer is the 41st Saluki Baseball player all-time to be taken as a top-10 round pick and the 101st SIU player to be taken in the MLB Draft.Â
Whitmer finished his stellar SIU career with 15 wins and a 3.70 career ERA. He struck out 224 batters in 282 career innings, including 95 strikeouts in 2017, which led the MVC during the regular season. Over the last two years, Whitmer made 30 starts, all on the weekend, and he spent that last year and a half as Southern's No. 1 starter. Twenty two of his 30 starts over the last two years were quality starts (six or more innings and three or fewer earned runs).Â
Whitmer was a two-time All-MVC pick and was a two-time MVC PItcher of the Week during his senior season. In 2017, his 104 innings ranked 12th in single-season school history and his 95 strikeouts ranked eighth. For his career, Whitmer's 282 innings ranked fifth in Saluki history and his 224 strikeouts ranked eighth.Â
Whitmer is Southern's highest draft since Sam Coonrod was taken in the fifth round by the San Francisco Giants in 2014.Â
