Landon is the first three-time Academic All-American in SIU Track and Field history
Southern Illinois jumper Kyle Landon earned first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Friday.Â
This marks the third-consecutive year the Chester, Ill. native has been named an Academic All-American, as he was selected to the third-team in 2015 and the second-team in 2016.
A senior in 2017, Landon is the first three-time Academic All-American in program history. He is also the first Saluki to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team since Neophytos Kalogerou did so in 1999.Â
Landon earned his bachelor's degree in accounting and graduated from SIU with a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average. A silver medalist at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and a five-time All-American, Landon is the only jumper in Missouri Valley Conference history to win eight high jump titles. In all, he's a nine-time MVC Champion, and one of six athletes in Valley history to earn a share of the Most Valuable Athlete award at the conference's indoor and outdoor championships in the same season.Â
To be eligible, athletes must have been in their second year at an institution with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have earned first-team Academic All-District honors.Â
Landon will next compete for a national title at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships on Sunday, June 25. The men's high jump competition gets underway at Hornet Stadium in Sacremento, Calif. at 2:05 p.m. CT.
