Football holds annual year-end banquet

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2017 Saluki Football program held its annual year-end banquet on Saturday. Ryan Neal was named the Tony Bleyer Team MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. Kyron Watson earned the Toughest Saluki award and Harry Bobbitt Spirit award. D.J. Davis was named Offensive MVP.Â
Craig James was named the team's Most Improved Player; Dyllan Conway was named Offensive Scout of the Year; and Makel Calhoun and Raquan Lindsey earned co-Defensive Scout of the Year awards.Â
Ryan Neal ended his illustrious SIU career with 226 tackles. In his senior year, he started all 11 games and was sixth in the MVFC in interceptions. He led SIU and ranked seventh in the MVFC in tackles per game, and he was the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week after eight tackles, a fumble recovery and a 52-yard interception return at SEMO.Â
Kyron Watson was second on the team with 75 tackles, 50 of which were solo stops. He had 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks as a senior. He also recorded four QB hurries, one pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.Â
D.J. Davis was second in the MVFC and 19th nationally in all-purpose yards during his sophomore season. He earned sophomore All-America honors from HERO Sports. He led the league in kick return average and led all MVFC running backs in receptions.
