Track and Field Splits Up for Weekend Meets
01/26/2018 | 1:23:00 | Track and Field
The Salukis will compete at a pair of Big 10 meets.
The Saluki track and field team will split up this weekend, as the sprinters and hurdlers head to Iowa to take part in the Black and Gold Premier while the rest of the team will head to Indiana University to compete at the Indiana Relays.
Men's Team Ranked Regionally
The Saluki men are ranked 10th in the Midwest Region, according to the USTFCCCA. Southern is the highest-ranked Missouri Valley Conference team in the Midwest Region with Illinois State one spot back at No. 11.
The Only One
SIU is the only program in the nation currently with four throwers ranked in the top-50 of the shot put. Both Kentucky's men and North Dakota State's women have three throwers ranked in the top-50. The Salukis hold four of the top-five marks in the Missouri Valley Conference in the men's shot put, and SIU and the UNI Panthers account for the top-9 marks in the Valley this season.
Strength in numbers
SIU has four throwers ranked in top-8 of the Missouri Valley Conference in both the men's and women's shot put.Â
One of three
Alexis Roberson is one of three underclassmen ranked in the top-20 nationally in the weight throw. Kansas State's Helene Ingvaldsen (12th) and North Dakota State's Maddy Nilles (14th) are the other underclassmen ranked in a top-20 that features 10 seniors and seven juniors.
70 and beyond
Isaac Ingram has set a personal-best in the weight throw in each of SIU's three meets this season, including a winning toss of 70'-3.5" (21.42m) at the Vanderbilt Invitational that moved him into fourth on Southern's all-time list. The Harrisburg, Ill. native is ranked 11th nationally and is the only thrower in the Valley ranked in the top-50 of the event.
Allow me to reintroduce myself
Josh Maier had a memorable season debut at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Maier clocked the fastest 3K time in the MVC, and the eighth-fastest 3K time in school history, to finish ninth in a field of 74 runners with a time of 8:14.80.
Putting it all together
SIU's 4x400 relay team of Alicia Reed, Tyjuana Eason, Chrissa Harris and Shafiqua Maloney  clocked the fastest-time in the MVC this season at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The quartet ran the fifth-fastest time in school history at 3:45.38.
