Men's Golf finishes tied for 10th at Fighting Irish Classic

Playing in its fourth tournament in the last five weeks, the Southern Illinois men's golf team tied for 10th place out of 15 teams at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic on Monday.
The team score of 1-under par marked the second time this season the Salukis have finished a tournament under par. They also accomplished the feat in the season-opening win at Indiana.
The field featured nine teams from Power Five conferences and SIU finished ahead of one of them — 14th-place Nebraska.
"This was another event on our schedule where we're seeing really good programs," SIU head coach Justin Fetcho said. "That was our goal when we put together this schedule. I think it will help us learn and move forward to become better as a team."
Senior Luke Gannon (-4) was Southern's top finisher, tying for 17th place today with a score of 209. Of his 11 rounds this season, he has been even or under par in nine of them, including a five-under par 67 in today's final round.
"Luke has done a great job of being consistent through every event," said Fetcho. "He's truly taking on a senior leader role on the team."
Other standouts for SIU were senior Peyton Wilhoit (-2) and freshman Matthis Besard (E). Wilhoit finished tied for 26th with a score of 211 while Besard tied for 34th with a score of 213.
The Salukis have one more tournament to play this fall. On November 2-4, the team will compete at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Maui — the program's first-ever trip to Hawaii.
