CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University freshmen Je'Quan Burton and Luke Giegling were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer team, the league announced on Tuesday.
A true freshman from Orlando, Fla., Burton (5-9, 168, Fr.) made an impact at both wide receiver and return specialist. As a receiver, he caught 11 passes for 139 yards and one touchdown and also carried the ball 21 times for 105 yards and a 5.0 yard average. Burton ranked third in the league in kickoff return average at 24.2 yards per return and tied the school record with a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown at North Dakota State. He also returned six punts for 30 yards and was an emergency backup at cornerback late in the season.
Giegling (6-4, 239, Fr.), a redshirt freshman from St. Louis, Mo., played in all 11 games and started seven, taking over at outside linebacker after Cody Crider suffered a season-ending injury. Giegling finished third on the team in tackles with 52 and added 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Two of his sacks came against South Dakota. He had an interception at Illinois State and a career-high 10 tackles against Indiana State.
