EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's basketball team held SIU Edwardsville to 38 percent shooting in a 82-61 road win on Saturday afternoon at Vadalabene Center. Edwardsville native Armon Fletcher had 24 points and nine rebounds against his hometown team and became the 46th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points.
SIU (5-3) had an eight point lead at halftime and led by double-figures for most of the second half, growing the lead to 20 with 13 minutes to play. SIUE (1-5) chipped the lead down to 10 with three minutes to go, but SIU finished the game on a 14-3 run and were never seriously threatened. Edwardsville had 15 offensive rebounds and forced 17 Saluki turnovers, but SIU went 31-for-52 from the field (59.6 percent) in the win.Â
"I wasn't really excited with how we played today. I don't mind telling you that," SIU head coach Barry Hinson said. "We didn't play well. We turned the ball over and got out-rebounded. We gave up 17 turnovers, and we just can't do that. We were loose with the ball. We were lackadaisical on defense, especially our bigs in the first half. But I'll take a 21-point road win--ugly, good looking, pretty, doesn't matter. The objective is to win."
Five Salukis scored in double figures; Fletcher was joined by Eric McGill (12), Sean Lloyd Jr. (11), Thik Bol (11) and Aaron Cook (10). As a team, SIU shot 60 percent from the field and went 11-for-20 from the 3-point line.Â
"It's nice when the other team is scouting you and you have (five) guys averaging double-figures, and seven guys close to averaging double-figures," Hinson said. "I think we're balanced. I go back--the only complaints I have today are how guarded ball screens, our turnovers and our rebounding. Our rebounding has to get better. If it's not, we'll pay the price for it."
Fletcher dominated the game, with game highs in both points (24) and rebounds (9). He was 8-for-10 from the field and 5-for-5 from the 3-point line in the win. McGill continued his hot play with 12 points (on 3-for-5 shooting), three rebounds, five assists and two steals. Thik Bol went 5-for-7 from the field, including three dunks and punctuated by a 180-degree punctuation mark near the end of the game.Â
SIU, which came into the game among the national leaders in assists per game, against were unselfish with 19 assists. In addition to McGill's game-high five assists, Aaron Cook and Kavion Pippen each had four assists and Fletcher had three.Â
Southern Illinois has won five of its last six games heading into Wednesday night's showdown with Saint Louis. Impressively, SIU wrapped its longest road streak since 2014 with a 3-1 record and three-straight wins away from SIU Arena.Â
The Salukis and Billikens face off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night in SIU Arena. SLU, the preseason Atlantic 10 Conference favorites, is coming off a 12-point win over perennial power Butler on Saturday afternoon. For tickets, call 877-SALUKIS or visit SIUSalukis.com/tickets.
