PALM DESERT, CA – Southern Illinois are headed to the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate to start the spring season off. The players traveling this weekend are, Peyton Wilhoit, Hunter York, Luke Gannon, Dirk Kuehler and Dean Harpe.
The lineup for this weekend includes 24 teams from around the country, Texas Tech, UCLA, UC Fullerton, Southern Utah, Southern Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, Boise State, TCU, University of Denver, South Dakota State, University of Idaho, California, SFA, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, LMU, UC Riverside, University of Colorado, Nebraska, Old Dominion, Wyoming, Wichita State, University of Texas-Arlington, and Oklahoma State.
The Salukis are ranked at 110 in the NCAA by GolfStat.com. Out of the 24 teams, 12 of them are ranked within the top 100 and seven of those are within the top 50. Oklahoma State is currently ranked at the number two spot. Needless to say, the Salukis have some tough competition.
"Over the last few years, our program has proven that we will go and compete with anyone in the country. The ranking is just a number," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "When you are hitting the golf ball, it doesn't know what your ranked or what the team name is on the front of your shirt. We aren't concerning ourselves with what teams are in the field because we can't play defense against them. We can only control ourselves and how we play."
Â
The team ended the fall with a first place win at Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Georgia. Junior Peyton Wilhoit won the individual competition as well securing his first tournament win.
"We showed that we can compete at a very high level at certain times in the fall, now it is up to us to go out and show that every time we tee it up throughout the spring," Fetcho said. "I believe that we will definitely learn some things about ourselves this week and we will take those teaching moments and make ourselves stronger in the long run."
Live stats will be available via GolfStat. The teams will tee off on Friday at 7 AM for the first round. Rounds two and three will be Saturday and Sunday both starting at 7 AM. Â
