Current Salukis vs. the Panthers
Makenzie Silvey scored a career-high 17 points, of which seven points came in overtime, in SIU's 60-53 win over UNI on Jan. 5, 2018. Nicole Martin is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in three career meetings against the Panthers, including 16 points at UNI a year ago. Kylie Giebelhausen will play her 10th career game against the Panthers, a team that she has struggled against during her stellar career. The East Peoria, Ill. native has only once reached double figures against the Panthers, when she poured in 17 points on 54.5% shooting to lead the Salukis to a 64-59 win at home a year ago. Her 4.7 points per game average against the Panthers is the lowest for her against any Valley school.
Former Assistant
UNI head coach Tanya Warren was an assistant on Cindy Stein's coaching staff at Missouri, where the two coached together from 2001-04. During that stretch, the Tigers made the postseason all three seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2003-04 season. Warren was 0-1 in her playing career against SIU while at Creighton, but has fared much better since taking the reigns at UNI. Warren, the longest tenured coach in the MVC, holds an .782% winning percentage (18-5) against the Salukis. Four of SIU's five wins against Warren's Panthers have come during Stein's tenure as head coach. Warren holds a 7-5 all-time edge against her former boss dating back to Stein's days at Missouri.
RPI
The Missouri Valley Conference has four teams with top-175 RPIs, led by Drake at 88. Missouri State is second at 116, while SIU is third at 138 and UNI fourth at 166.
Working Overtime
The Salukis defeated the Missouri State Lady Bears in overtime, 71-69 on Friday, Jan. 26. Southern improved to 3-0 this season in overtime games and SIU's three overtime wins are it's most in a single season in program history. Southern is 6-3 (.667) in overtime games under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein and 26-18 (.590) all-time in overtime games since the 1974-75 season.
SIU one of only four nationally
SIU is one of 18 teams in the nation to have played at least three overtime games thus far this season. Creighton leads that category, having already played five overtime contests. Of the 18 teams nationally to have played in at least three overtime games, SIU is one of only four with an unblemished record. Albany, who defeated SIU in Puerto Rico earlier this season, American University and North Carolina are the only programs with at least three overtime wins and no losses.
Sharing the load
Brittney Patrick scored a career-high 15 points in the win over Missouri State and led the Salukis in scoring for the first time in her career. She is the sixth different Saluki to lead the team in scoring this season, which are the most for SIU in a single-season since the 2013-14 season in which Southern had seven different players lead the team in scoring.
Rank in the top-3
The Salukis rank in the top-3 of the Missouri Valley Conference in both steals and blocked shots, as Southern is currently second in blocks and third in steals. SIU has never finished in the top-5 of both categories in the same season since the NCAA began recording steals and blocks during the 1987-88 season. The Salukis have only finished in the top-five of the conference in steals four times in the past 30 years, most recently when they finished third in 2007-08. Southern has finished in the top-five of the league in blocks in three of Coach Stein's four full seasons and 17 times in the past 30 years.
Leading the Valley
Makenzie Silvey leads all Valley freshmen in scoring at 10.7 points per game, while Abby Brockmeyer is second at 10.5 ppg. Brockmeyer leads all MVC freshmen in field goal percentage (52.6%), rebounds per game (7.2) and blocks per game (1.24). Brockmeyer ranks 15th nationally amongst freshmen in rebounds and 22nd nationally among freshmen for blocks per game.
Racking up weekly honors
The Salukis have won Newcomer of the Week four times this season after Makenzie Silvey was named the recipient of the award on Jan. 22. It marked the fourth time this season that a Saluki has claimed Newcomer of the Week honors, as Abby Brockmeyer is a three-time recipient of the award. Silvey's win marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that SIU has had multiple players earn Newcomer of the Week recognition during the same season.
Career-effort from Martin
Nicole Martin scored a career-high 24 points at Drake on Friday, and she set or tied career-bests in field goals made (11), field goals attempted (15), three-pointers attempted (1), and minutes played (37). Martin has now scored in double figures in seven-straight games, and in 15 of 21 games this season. It marked the 21st time she has reached double figures in her career.
Giebelhausen in double figures
Kylie Giebelhausen scored 16 points at Drake on Friday, which marked the 10th time this season, and the 61st time in her career, that she has reached double figures.
Hot Start
SIU has now scored 21 points in the first quarter of three games this season. SIU did so vs. UT Martin on Oct. 13, at Morehead State on Nov. 30 and then again at Drake on Feb. 2.
Five Scored in double figures
The Salukis had five players score in double figures at Drake, which marked the first time that Southern has accomplished that since a Dec. 30, 2016 win over Loyola.
10-plus steals
The Salukis recorded 11 steals in wins over Loyola and Valparaiso last weekend, which marks the seventh time SIU has swiped 10-plus steals in a game this season. That's the most 10-plus steal games in a single season in the Cindy Stein era, and the most since the 2012-13 season when the Salukis posted eight games with 10-plus steals. The school record for most games with at least 10 steals is 20, set by the 1994-95 Salukis. Southern is 5-2 this season when snagging 10-plus steals and are 118-104 (.531) since 1988 when finishing with at least 10 steals.
Making her freebies
Nicole Martin finished with 18 points in the win over Valparaiso, which marked the 13th time in 19 games this season that she has reached double figures. 12 of her 18 points came at the charity stripe, as Martin knocked down 12-of-13 on Jan. 21. Her 12 makes were a career-high and the most by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin made 12 freebies on her way to a career-high 34 points against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 24, 2012. Martin leads the Valley in free throws attempted (103).

Of players who have made at least 100 career three-pointers, Karrie Redeker's (1988-92) 62.6% career field goals being three-pointers is the highest. Jordyn Courier (2011-14) is second at 62.2%.
