Brianna Jones named MVC Pitcher of the Week

For the eighth time of her career, junior pitcher Brianna Jones was named as the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, this time for her performance at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Florida.

Jones was dominant for Southern on the weekend and was a major part of the Salukis' 4-1 team record. Overall, Jones was 3-0 with 23 strikeouts and only 4 walks. Two of her wins were shutouts and all three of her starts were complete games. Jones held opposing hitters to a miniscule .181 batting average and posted an earned run average of 0.97.

 In her start against Quinnipiac, Jones threw nine shutout innings and allowed just three hits. She struck out six bobcats and walked one. Against Rider, Jones threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout in the 10-0 victory. She struck out seven Broncs despite only pitching five innings. Against Maine, Jones threw another complete game while tying a season-high of 10 strikeouts. She allowed two runs and five hits in the first-two innings, but settled in and threw five-straight scoreless innings and allowed three hits after the second.

Jones' three wins on the weekend helped her improve to 11-1 on the season. She leads the league in wins and her 86 strikeouts are second in the league.

Jones last won the MVC's player of the week award in May of 2017. Her eight career Pitcher and Newcomer of the Week awards ties her for seventh most all-time in MVC history. Former Saluki pitcher Amy Harre and Creighton's Tara Oltman are tied for the all-time lead in individual Weekly Awards with 13 total. This is Southern's 123rd MVC Weekly Award, the Salukis lead the Valley all-time in Weekly Awards. Southern last won a Weekly Award earlier this season when sophomore catcher Katelyn Massa was named the MVC Player of the Week.
