TAMPA, Fla. – The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in third place at the South Florida Invitational on Tuesday, edged out of second place by just two strokes by Florida Atlantic. Host USF won the tournament.
After day one of the invitational, the Salukis (290-312-304 = 906) were in second place, leading FAU by a narrow three-stroke margin. Florida Atlantic picked up five strokes on the final day.
"The first round of the tournament was definitely our best round," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "We play a lot of really good golf, but we have a few holes that we'd like to have back and didn't score just how we want to."
Junior Peyton Wilhoit (+3) continued his remarkable season, taking third place. He has finished in the top 10 in four-straight tournaments. Junior Luke Gannon (+6) picked up a top 10 finish as well, placing seventh and firing 10 of the teams 38 birdies. Junior Hunter York (+14) also had 10 birdies and finished tied for 21st place. Gannon and York have improved in each tournament, Fetcho said.
The team returns to Carbondale to prep for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia on March 25-27.
