CARBONDALE, Ill. | The Southern Illinois baseball team held the lead against Louisiana Monroe until the top of the ninth. The Warhawks won game one of the series 5-4.
Â
"We have to use our speed. We're going to be a pretty good offensive club," said SIU head coach Ken Hednerson. "I told them we have to start putting AB's together, where we can get some good three or four run innings. We did use our speed and grinded out. We put pressure on them early in the game and I think we ran well".
Â
In the top of the second only one batter was able to get on base as well as in the top of the third. Freshman Trey McDaniel went in to pitch for Michael Baird at the top of the seventh. Senior Ryan Netemeyer went in to pitch for McDaniel at the top of the ninth. ULM's Chad Bell hit a double down the left field line off of Netemeyer to allow two runs for Louisiana Monroe.
Â
SIU Baseball had spectacular offense in the bottom of the third. With Sophomore Addison Fugitt on third and Senior Connor Kopach on first. Junior Nikola Vasic singled to center field and then advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Vasic then advanced to third allowing Fugitt (earned) and Kopach (unearned) to scored.
Â
SIU and Louisiana Monroe will play the second game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Central Time. Southern Illinois will start Jamison Steege.
