Salukis kick off competition at 51st Tennessee Relays

The Southern Illinois track and field team kicked off the 51st annual Tennessee Relays Thursday night at Tom Black Track.
The three-day meet got underway Thursday beginning with the decathlon, heptathlon and the men's and women's hammer throw competitions.
Madison Meyer finished day one of the heptathlon in sixth place with 3,052 points. The Carterville, Ill. product ran 25.02 to set a PR in the 200m dash and finish third in the event. She will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800m run on Friday.
Matthew Bigelow is in seventh place in the decathlon after six events. Bigelow set PRs in back-to-back events to close out day one, as he ran 51.15 in the 400m dash to notch a personal-best and followed with a PR in the 110m hurdles at 15.46. He will compete in the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m run on day two.
In the women's hammer throw, Shauneice O'Neal advanced to the finals and finished eighth. The Florissant, Mo. native threw 173'-0" (52.73m) on her first attempt to give her the best finish by a freshman in the event. Volunteer assistant coach and 2016 Olympian DeAnna Price won with her opening toss of 226'-11" (69.17m), which broke Amber Campbell's 2008 meet record of 68.48m and Anna Norgren-Mahon's 2002 Tom Black Track record.
On the men's side, Ricky Hurley was Southern's top finisher in the hammer. Hurley took fifth with a mark of 199'-10" (60.92m), which came on his fourth attempt.Â
Day two of the decathlon and the heptathlon competitions get underway Friday at 10 a.m., while events on the track begin at 2:45 p.m. with the women's 400m hurdles. Saluki Hall of Famer Ivory Crockett will be honored on Friday prior to the men's 100m dash competition at 3:30 p.m., which can be viewed live on the SEC+ Network.
