Men's Golf finishes 11th at Boilermaker Invitational

The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in 11th place out of 17 teams at the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday. Weather conditions deteriorated throughout the day with temperatures dropping into the 40s with strong winds out of the north. Sunday's final round was canceled.
"This field was good for us to come and compete in something like this right before our conference championship," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "Adding in the weather conditions on the golf course, it made it very tough and difficult out there. I think we handled it pretty well. We played a lot of good golf."
As has been the case all season, SIU's Peyton Wilhoit (+1) was unfazed by the conditions and fired rounds of 73 and 72. The top-ranked golfer in the Missouri Valley Conference finished the tournament tied for 12th place and six strokes off the pace set by Central Florida's Bobby Bai (-5).
Southern's best individual rounds of the day actually came from Luke Gannon (+3) and Dirk Kuehler (+5). Gannon shot a 70 in the second round, while Kuehler fired a 70 in the first. Neither golfer could sustain that level of play over 36 holes, however.
"I was beyond excited for both Dirk and Luke with their rounds," said Fetcho. "For Dirk to lead the way for us in the first round with two under par and 70. With those kind of conditions and that kind of course, for him to shoot his best round this year is just a testament to how much he is improving and getting better."Â
Kent State (+3) and Northwestern (+3) tied for first place. SIU (+16) was well within striking distance of a top 10 finish against a field that features three Top 50 ranked squads before the final round was canceled.
