The Southern Illinois track and field team got competition at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational underway Friday, highlighted by a trio of first-place finishes.
Sian Person (open shot put), Marcellus Fletcher (open long jump) and Ricky Hurley (seeded hammer throw) each posted wins on day one of the two day meet, hosted by the University of Louisville.
Person won the open section of the women's shot put with a lifetime-best toss. The Carbondale, Ill. native threw 49'-11.25" (15.22m) to win for the second time in her collegiate career and she improved upon her previous personal-best by more than three feet. Person also moved up to fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference with her heave.
Competing in the men's open long jump, Fletcher won with a near personal-best. The Vinton, Va. native jumped 23'-4" (7.11m) on his third attempt to tie his lifetime-best in the event. Fletcher's PR now gives him the second-best mark in the MVC to go along with his conference-leading mark in the triple jump.
Hurley won the seeded section of the men's hammer throw and was one of three Salukis to finish in the top-5. The reigning MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week threw 203'-6" (62.04m) to win the event and tallied four throws over 200-feet in his series in the circle. Nate Dyer set a PR with his toss of 198'-03" (60.43) to finish second while Kyle Kling added a fifth place finish.
The Salukis are back for day two of the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational tomorrow at 8 a.m. beginning with field events. Events on the track get underway at 10 a.m. with live results available here.
