"I was really impressed with Brianna's toughness after throwing 16 innings yesterday to come out and throw as well as she did. Evansville is a good enough ball club that they got ahold of a couple of balls, but other than that she threw really well. Our offense set the tone right away. I asked the kid to give us a full-seven innings and that's what they did."
Â
The Salukis opened the scoring in the top of the first with a big inning. Sophomores Susie Baranski and Maddy Vermejan opened the game with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Katelyn Massa drew a walk to load the bases. Then, senior Sydney Jones doubled to score Vermejan and freshman Jenny Jansen to make the score 2-0. Two batters later, freshman Maris Boelens singled to center to score Jones and Massa to make the score 4-0 after just a half inning.
Â
Evansville scored one in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
Â
The Salukis tacked on another in the second when Massa hit a sac fly to center to score Baranski who walked earlier in the inning to make the score 5-1.
Â
In the top of the third, sophomore Kyleigh Decker struck with a home run into the alley in the right that scored senior Savannah Fisher to make it a 7-1 game.
Â
Southern scored once more in the fourth when Sydney Jones grounded out to second to score Vermejan.
Â
Sydney Jones went 1-3 in the game with 3 RBIs, a walk and a run scored.
Â
Brianna Jones had a nice start after a day in which she threw 16 innings and struck out a program-record 20 batters. She added 9 K's today to bring her weekend total to 29. She allowed six hits and three earned runs in the game. She pulled her ERA down from 2.35 to 2.19 on the weekend. It was her 22nd win this season, she is just one win short of tying her career high for single-season wins.
Â
With the win, the Salukis swept their first Conference series of the year and improved to seven games over .500 on the season. Southern has now won five of its last six games heading into the final weekend of regular-season play against UNI.
Â
"I want to see our team continue to have good preparation and play really, really hard, which is what we did this weekend. I can see our confidence start to grow. We hit that bump in the road after the Drake series and we got our legs about us. We're playing like we're capable of playing."
