
Three Salukis named to MVC Scholar-Athlete team

Sydney Jones and Maddy Vermejan were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athlete Team and sophomore catcher Katelyn Massa was named to the team as an honorable mention today for their achievements on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete team, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2.

The Salukis have had at least two athletes named to the team for 21-consective seasons.

Sydney Jones, who has a 3.82 GPA in sports administration, was named to the team as an honorable mention in 2016 and made the first team for the first time in her career. Jones was selected to the All-MVC second-team this year after hitting .247 with six home runs, two of which were grand slams, 32 RBIs and six doubles. Jones hit a walk-off single against SEMO on April 5. Jones' three sac flies were good for 42nd in the NCAA.

Vermejan made the Scholar-Athlete Team for the first time in her career. She is carrying a 3.70 GPA in sports administration. Vermejan had a fantastic year. She was named to the Missouri Valley Conference First Team and was the Valley's Defensive Player of the Year. Vermejan hit .346 on the season, had an on-base percentage of .474 and slugged at a clip of .529. She hit five home runs, had 11 doubles and 27 RBIs. She was hit by a pitch 22 times this season, the second-most times in a season in program history. She led the Valley in hit by pitch and was second in on base percentage and runs scored.

Massa was also named to the Scholar-Athlete team for the first time as an honorable mention. Massa nearly broke the program record for RBI in a single season at SIU with 48. She led the league in the category. She hit .310 with 11 home runs, 11 doubles and 93 total bases. She led the team in slugging at .589 and walked 30 times, more than any other player in the league. She was second in the league in slugging, total bases and third in home runs. Massa was named to the All-MVC First Team last week.
