A 6-foot-5 senior at Potter's House Christian High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Jimmy will become the third Beane to play for Southern in the last three years. The first was Anthony Beane Jr., a 6-foot-2 guard who scored 1,917 points from 2013-16 to become the school's third all-time leading scorer. Anthony's younger brother, Darius, also a guard, signed with SIU last fall.Â
"We are fortunate to add another Beane to our program and Jimmy has an opportunity to be a special player in the Missouri Valley Conference," said SIU head coach Barry Hinson. "The interesting part of this is he's not comparable to Anthony or Darius. Anthony was a two-guard who could score. Darius is a true point guard. Jimmy is a small forward."
Jimmy averaged 19 points and seven rebounds last season at Potter's House and was named the team's offensive most-valuable player. The team finished with a 17-14 record and Beane was named second-team all conference in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association.Â
"Jimmy's strength is that he's very athletic and a very strong kid with a college-ready body," said Potter's House head coach Stephen McLaughlin. "He has a very good mid-range pull-up game. I would like to see him attack the basket a little more, but that will come with time. He has the capability to become a big-time player when everything falls into place."
Prior to Potter's House, Beane played for Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana. He drew scholarship offers from numerous mid-majors and recruiting interest from several high-major programs before ultimately settling on SIU.
"I think the family ties were important, but from the very beginning (SIU) showed they really wanted Jimmy," McLaughlin said. "A lot of schools tried to use their name to stay in contact, but they were not showing him the love SIU was showing him."
Jimmy Beane joins Darius Beane, Sam Shafer and Amadou Fall as incoming freshmen for the Salukis next season. SIU returns five starters from last year's team that finished 20-13.
