Price was one of seven Saluki alums to compete at the USATF Championships.
A Saluki alumna broke the American hammer throw record for the third time in under a month, as DeAnna Price reclaimed her American record to win the event on day three of the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
Price threw 256'-3" (78.12m) en route to her first USATF Championship in the hammer throw. The Moscow Mills, Mo. native took the lead on her first attempt and never looked back. Price broke through to claim the top spot in a field that consisted of the past 10 champions in the event in Amanda Bingson, Amber Campbell, Jessica Cosby and Gwen Berry. Her mark is No. 4 all-time and remains the top thrower in the world.
Berry, the defending champion who's record Price bested, finished second with a toss of 239'-5" (72.99m). She now ranks fifth all-time and is in second in the world hammer throw rankings.
Fellow Saluki alumna Jeneva (McCall) Stevens took sixth in the hammer throw with her mark of 225'-10" (68.85m) and later finished seventh in the shot put at 58'-6.75" (17.85m).Â
Competing for the final time in the Maroon and White, Jared Kern placed 14th in the men's shot put. Kern threw 63'-9.50" (19.44m) on his second attempt. Saluki alum and volunteer coach Josh Freeman advanced to the finals in the event with his mark of 67'-0" (20.42m) but settled for sixth after he was unable to improve upon his mark with his final three throws.
Also competing at the USATF Outdoor Championships with Saluki ties was Kyle Landon, who placed 12th in the men's high jump and Alex Morgan, who finished 14th in the women's discus.
