Hazel, Hurley and Kern set to compete at NCAA Outdoor Championships

The Southern Illinois men's track & field trio of Jared Kern, Warren Hazel and Ricky Hurley are in Eugene, Ore., this week for the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Competition will be held from June 6-9 at the University of Oregon's Historic Hayward Field, which is the host venue for the sixth time in the last seven seasons and the seventh time in the last nine.
Kern and Hazel will both be competing at their third NCAA Championship meet, while Hurley will make his NCAA Championship debut. Southern's three national qualifiers are the most of any Missouri Valley Conference school.
While Kern will make his third appearance at a national meet, it will mark his first at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Machesney Park, Ill. native has had a tremendous outdoor season for the Salukis, as he broke both the school and conference shot put records and won his second career MVC shot put title. He will throw at 8:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 6.Â
Hazel, who finished 14th in the 400m dash at last year's NCAA meet, will try to become the first Saluki since Michael Franks in 1985 to earn All-America first team status in the 400m. The three-time MVC 400m Champion clocked a season-best time of 45.76 at the NCAA Midwest Regional to finish sixth and advance to Eugene. The 400m dash semifinals begin Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT with Hazel running in heat two of three.Â
Hurley punched his ticket to his first national meet after he took 12th in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Regional. The sophomore sensation from Fox River Grove, Ill. claimed the MVC Most Valuable Field Athlete award after he won both the hammer throw and the discus at the conference meet to go along with a fourth place finish in the shot put. It is the sixth time in the last eight years that a Saluki male hammer thrower has qualified for the national meet and SIU men's and women's throwers have combined to advance to the NCAA Championship meet 19 times in the event since the NCAA adopted the current regional format in 2010. Hurley is set to throw at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 6.
Finals for the men's 400-meter dash will take place on Friday, June 8. To qualify for finals, Hazel must finish in the top-eight on Wednesday.
ESPN will provide television and internet streaming coverage each day of the meet: Wednesday (6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2), Thursday (6:30 p.m. on ESPNU and 7 p.m. on ESPN), Friday (7:30 p.m. on ESPN) and Saturday (5:30 p.m. on ESPN).
All broadcasts can be streamed live online at WatchESPN.com or with the WatchESPN app.
