CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois football team will have more than just football on its mind when it opens the gates of Saluki Stadium for the second public scrimmage of training camp on Thursday night.
The football program has partnered with The Women's Center of Carbondale for a Diaper Drive, in which fans are encouraged to donate packages of diapers for the children of women housed at the center's shelter. Created in 1972, The Women's Center was one of the first domestic violence centers in the country.
Head coach Nick Hill said the team has taken a strong interest in efforts to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault after inspirational speaker Rachel Baribeau met with the team to discuss the topics.
"When Rachel came in the spring to talk to our team about Change The Narrative, we talked about what are some things we can do on campus or in Carbondale to make a difference?" Hill explained. "We have a hundred men in our program, and I think it's an important topic for our guys to take a strong leadership position on our campus and within the community."
Saluki players and coaches volunteered this summer at The Women's Center, helping disassemble beds when the floors were refinished, and doing some painting. During training camp, the team has delivered leftovers from team meals to the center's kitchen.
"The players noticed that a lot of the women have small children," Hill added. "Diapers aren't cheap, so we thought this would be another opportunity to help."
Stadium gates open at 5 p.m. and the scrimmage begins at 6 p.m. Players will deliver the diapers immediately after the scrimmage.
