Men's Golf finishes 8th at Iowa Golfweek Conference Challenge

In a rain-shortened tournament, the Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in eighth place out of 16 teams at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Tuesday's final round was cancelled due to rain.
Senior Peyton Wilhoit (-3) led the Salukis in scoring and finished tied for ninth place, marking the eighth time in his career he's placed in the top 10. Wilhoit finished five strokes off the pace of tournament champion Julien Sale of Arkansas State.
Coach Justin Fetcho said, "For Peyton to get a top ten place, he's kind of picked up where he left off last season. He's been a really strong and consistent performer for us, so have Luke Gannon and Frankie Thomas."
The Salukis entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to Golfweek's computer formula. Although the team finished in the middle of the pack at Iowa, SIU finished ahead of Power Five teams from Kansas State and Boston College.
"I think our guys can see that we're there with a lot of good programs." said Coach Justin Fetcho, "To finish a couple shots back of a team like UCLA who's usually a top 25 program every year shows that we're getting better and working hard. We're getting close to really breaking through. We're looking forward to taking some of that momentum and putting it towards this coming weekend."
Southern returns to action this weekend at the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern.
