The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished tied for second-place at the Cardinal Classic on Tuesday and had three Salukis finish in the top-20. The Salukis shot rounds of 302, 301, and 298 to finish with a 54-hole total of 901 (+37) at The Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana. The University of Indianapolis won the tournament with a score of 866 (+2) in the 16-team field.
The Dawgs had a strong performance from junior Erica Kerr (+6) who finished in the top-10 tied for 6th. Kerr shot 6-birdies to finish the second round with 1-under-par 71 on the par 72 course, her best round of the tournament.
"I'm very proud of her," SIU head coach Danielle Kaufman said. "One thing about Erica is she never gives up and keeps plugging away. She worked hard and held her own."
The Salukis had two top-20 finishes from sophomores Emilyee McGiles (T15) and Moyea Russell (T19) who shot 54-hole totals of 225 (+9) and 226 (+10), respectively. Junior Lili Klekner-Alt carded a 234 (+18) and finished tied for 40th. Jackie Biggs finished tied for 46th, shooting 235 (+19).
"Emilyee and Moyea are consistent players and had confidence going into this tournament again," Kaufman said. "Our team works hard, they grind it out, and never give up. We have the talent to break 300 every tournament. We just have to put it all together now that we have the first few tournaments out of the way."
The Salukis return to Carbondale to prepare for the Diane Thomason Invite set for Sept. 29-30 in Iowa City, Iowa.
