CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Saluki softball team's fall ball season continues with a doubleheader Saturday, Sept. 22 against Lindenwood University-Belleville and Lake Land College at Charlotte West Stadium.
The Salukis are coming off a pair of wins last weekend over John A. Logan College and Rend Lake College in which Southern's pitching didn't allow a run and three Salukis tallied three or more hits. Megan Brown led the way, as she went 4-for-6 on the afternoon with two doubles, a walk and a RBI. Kyleigh Decker went 3-for-6 with a three-run home run against Rend Lake while Jenny Jansen finished 3-for-7 with a double and a RBI.
"I thought we pitched the ball extremely well," head coach Kerri Blaylock said of Southern's performance during the opening weekend of fall ball. "Defensively we knew what we were doing. Offense was a little bit slow to get started but that isn't surprising. We just need to make some adjustments and we've had a good week of practice in regards to that."
The opening weekend also allowed SIU to get a look at its entire roster, as 17 different Salukis played including all five newcomers; Ashley Wood, Nicole Johnson, Sidney Sikes, Claire Miller and Holly Marousek. Wood played extensively at shortstop and drew four walks in two games at the plate and Johnson added a single and a stolen base. Sikes started game one at third base while Miller and Marousek combined to shutout Rend Lake.
"The other thing I really liked was getting to see so many of our players," Blaylock said. "We got a lot of people in the game in a lot of different situations."
This weekend, Southern hosts the Lindenwood University-Belleville Lynx and the Lake Land College Lakers.
The Lynx went 24-22 in the American Midwest Conference (NAIA) a year ago and have three returners who earned All-AMC honors last season in seniors Madison Mountain, Paige Kuefler and Zoie Villa.
The Lakers return eight from a team that went 48-18 a season ago and made their seventh trip in eight years to the NJCAA National Tournament. Marousek was Lake Land's ace and went 22-5 with a 2.67 ERA.
Southern opens Saturday's action against Lindenwood-Belleville at noon before taking on Lake Land College at 2 p.m. Lindenwood-Belleville and Lake Land will then face off at 4 p.m. Admission for kids 12 and under is free.
