The Salukis take on the Billikens at 2 p.m. before squaring off against the Racers at 4 p.m.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Saluki softball team is back in action Sunday, Sept. 30 with a fall ball doubleheader against Saint Louis University (2 p.m.) and Murray State (4 p.m.).
The Salukis are coming off Thursday night's win over Lake Land Community College. Southern hit four home runs and had nine players tally at least one hit, including four with multiple hits.
"I thought we came to play," head coach Kerri Blaylock said of the Salukis win over the Lakers. "We talked all week about how we needed to mimic what a mid-week will feel like in the spring when the kids have been in class all day and have to come out ready to play. Lake Land is a good club that always plays (NCAA) Division I opponents tough- I just thought we looked really good last night."
Kyleigh Decker and Jenny Jansen led the way against the Lakers. Decker hit two of SIU's four home runs while Jansen notched a team-best three hits, including her first round-tripper of the fall.
"Jen (Sewell) does such a great job with our hitters and what our plan will be and how we will approach each at-bat," Blaylock said. "The kids did a great job."
In the circle, Brianna Jones and Claire Miller didn't give up an earned run and surrendered just four hits through nine innings of work. Jones faced one above the minimum through six innings of work, with only two runners reaching base, neither of which advanced past second.
"They're in a rhythm right now, which is good," Blaylock said of her pitchers. "We're going to keep facing good competition throughout the fall and see where we are. I was also really proud of Katelyn Massa who threw out a kid stealing. We've been working hard on our catchers and timing, etc. and I thought that looked good too."
This weekend, Southern hosts the Billikens and the Racers. Even with two DI opponents coming to Carbondale, SIU's approach to the matchups the won't differ much from its three previous fall contests.
"We're still going to do mixed lineups and going to give players an opportunity to show themselves in the fall," Blaylock said. "We're also working on the left side of our infield, giving all of our outfielders opportunities and seeing some different hitters in DP situations. We are really glad that Christy (Connoyer) and Kara (Amundson) bring their clubs here because its really good competition for us."
St. Louis went 28-29 in the Atlantic 10 a year ago and return three who earned A-10 postseason honors in sophomores Sadie Wise, Kat Lane and Alyssa Chavez. Wise was the first Billiken freshman to earn a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 first team while Lane and Chavez nabbed All-Rookie honors.
The Racers finished last season with a 16-36 record and bring back a pair who earned OVC postseason honors in seniors Madison Culver and Lillie Goetz. Culver was named to All-OVC first team as a catcher, while Goetz was selected to the All-Newcomer team.
Sunday's festivities kick off with Murray State and St. Louis going head-to-head at 12 p.m. Southern and SLU will tangle at 2 p.m. followed by the Salukis versus the Racers at 4 p.m.
