
Salukis continue Valley road swing at Illinois State on Friday

The Salukis and the Redbirds will tangle for the 111th time on Friday
The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team travels to Normal, Ill. Friday, Jan. 18 to tangle with the Illinois State Redbirds. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed using the WatchESPN app and can be heard locally on MAGIC 95.1 FM.
All-Time vs. the Redbirds
• The Salukis and the Redbirds will meet for the 111th time in a rivalry that dates back to 1962.
• Illinois State leads the all-time series, 61-49.
• SIU had won five of the last six meetings with ISU prior to last season's sweep at the hands of the Redbirds.
• Both games last season were decided by three points.
Current Salukis vs. the Redbirds
• Nicole Martin is averaging 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in four career meetings against the Redbirds.
• Martin has reached double figures just once against the Redbirds. She scored 11 points and six rebounds at Illinois State a year ago.
• Abby Brockmeyer averaged 7.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in her two meetings against Illinois State.
• Brockmeyer joins Martin as the only two Salukis to have scored in double figures previously against the Redbirds, as she scored 10 points to go along with four boards at Illinois State last season.
• Celina VanHyfte, who posted 19 points and 13 rebounds in Annawan's 59-23 win over Carrolton in the Illinois Class A state title game at Redbird Arena in 2014, is a career 52.4% shooter against the Redbirds and averages 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds off the bench.
Scouting the Redbirds
• The Redbirds are 9-6 and 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Illinois State is 6-1 at home this season and had won six-straight home games before a 82-64 loss to Drake on Jan. 6.
• Illinois State is coming off a 72-61 win over Evansville that saw the Redbirds open up a 20-point lead at the half and hang on for their first Valley road win of the season.
• Tete Maggett, a JUCO transfer from Vincennes, scored a game-high 26 points in Illinois State's win over Evansville and has been named MVC Newcomer of the Week three times already this season.
• Maggett is averaging 16.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and is currently fifth in the league in scoring and free throw percentage (81.5%).
• Simone Goods, who did not play in ISU's 49-46 win over SIU at Redbird Arena last season, is averaging a team-best 17.2 points per game and shooting at a 51.7% clip. She currently ranks third in the MVC in scoring.
• Illinois State comes into Friday's contest ranked ninth in the league in three-pointers made (65) and three-pointers made per game (4.5).
Stein all-time vs. the Redbirds
• Illinois State is one of seven MVC teams that head coach Cindy Stein holds a winning record against in her career in a list that includes Southern Illinois, who she was 4-0 against while at Mizzou.
• Stein is 8-5 all-time vs. the Redbirds.

Jan. 18, 1986
• The Salukis took advantage of balanced scoring and 60% shooting in the second half to turn back Bradley, 72-63.
• It marked SIU's eighth-straight win in what became a program record 23-straight victories. The run and culminated in a NCAA Tournament berth.
• Petra Jackson collected double figures for the 23-straight game, as she finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists.
• Mary Berghuis added 10 points and nine rebounds and helped SIU out-rebound Bradley, 39-to-27.
Running the Point
• Brittney Patrick currently leads the Valley, and ranks 4th nationally, in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.45).
• Patrick's 5.2 assists per game also leads the MVC while she also leads the league in total assists (73).
• SIU has only once had a player lead the league in assists per game (Cartaesha Macklin, 2013) and Patrick's 3.45 assist-to-turnover ratio would be a school record.
• In fact, only 13 players from the Valley have finished with a 2.0 or higher assist-to-turnover ratio since the 2002-03 season.

You're in Good Hands
• Patrick finished with five assists to zero turnovers against Missouri State, which marked the third-straight game in which she hasn't turned the ball over.
• Patrick has an active streak of 86 minutes played without committing a turnover, with her last turnover coming with 7:14 to play in the fourth quarter of SIU's overtime win over IUPUI on Dec. 21, 2018.
Third Times a Charm
• Makenzie Silvey tied her career-high in rebounds for the third time this season with seven boards at Missouri State on Jan. 13.
• It marked the sixth time this season that Silvey has snagged six or more rebounds in a game- she did so just twice in 31 games as a freshman.
• Silvey is one assist shy of 100 for her career- when she dishes out career assist No. 100 she will become the 35th Saluki with 500 career points/150 rebounds/100 assists.
• Silvey's 36 three-pointers this season already rank her sixth for most threes in a single season by a sophomore in school history.
• Silvey ranks second in the league in three-pointers made (36), three-pointers attempted (105), and three-pointers made per game (2.57).
Closing in on 500
• Abby Brockmeyer enters the weekend 19 points shy of 500 for her career.
• When she reaches the 500-point milestone, Brockmeyer will become the 16th Saluki with at least 500 career points/300 rebounds/50 assists/50 blocks.
• Brockmeyer is currently top-5 in the league in double-doubles (2nd, 6), blocks per game (4th, 1.07) and rebounds per game (2nd, 8.6).
800 points/400 rebounds
• Nicole Martin scored her 800th career point at Missouri State on Jan. 13.
• She is the 26th Saluki with at least 800 career points and 400 career boards.
Leading the Way
• Nicole Martin made her first 11 attempts from the floor in the win over Evansville on Jan. 4 and finished 11-for-12.
• Martin's 91.7% field goal percentage is tied for the fifth-best single game performance in NCAA DI this season and was the best by a Saluki with at least 10 attempts since Dyana Pierre made 14-of-14 attempts from the floor in SIU's win over Murray State on Dec. 16, 2014.
• Martin has now scored in double figures in 11 of SIU's 14 games this season and in 41 of 76 career games.
• Martin is shooting 57.1% from the field this season- which currently ranks her second in the Valley and 29th nationally.
Disrupting Passing Lanes
• Southern has notched 10-plus steals in six games this season, including a streak of five-straight games.
• SIU's five-game streak of 10-plus steals was its longest since the 1994-95 team posted six-straight games with 10 or more takeaways.
• The Salukis are 5-1 this season when recording 10-plus steals and are 19-9 (.678) under Coach Cindy Stein when doing so.
RPI
• The Missouri Valley Conference currently has six teams with top-175 RPIs, according to Warrennolan.com.
• Drake leads the way at No. 14. Northern Iowa (No. 69), Missouri State (No. 142), Indiana State (No. 145), SIU (No. 166) and Bradley (No. 172) are all currently in the top half of the NCAA In RPI.
