BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team suffered a 60-52 loss to Illinois State on the road Friday evening.
The Salukis (8-7, 1-3 MVC) overcame a nine-point first-half deficit to take a lead for parts of the third quarter, but the Redbirds outscored Southern 22-to-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"I feel better after this game than I did the other two," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said of her team's now three-game losing streak. "I felt like the other two we let slip and I didn't feel like we had everyone on the same page. Today I felt like for the most part we had good energy, we're playing our hearts out and we just couldn't get things to fall."
SIU opened the game strong, jumping out to a 7-2 lead before Illinois State battled back to tie the game at 9-9 with 1:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Redbirds out-scored the Salukis 12-3 over the ensuing 6:47 to take their biggest lead of the day at 21-12.
Southern turned to its bench to help overcome its early deficit. Celina VanHyfte and Lauren Hartman both scored during a 9-3 SIU run that pulled Southern to within 24-21 at the half.
I thought our bench played fabulous today," Stein said. "I was really proud of our bench play especially our bigs coming in and Caitlin Link. I thought they did a good job of taking over a lot of things."
SIU continued its run after the break, pushing its way into a 31-27 lead four minutes into the second half on a pair of free throws by VanHyfte. The two teams battled back and forth through the rest of the second half with seven ties and eight lead changes as neither team led by more than four until the game's closing minutes.
The Redbirds, however, made shots when they needed to. Illinois State shot 66.7% (6-of-9) from the field in the fourth quarter, while the Salukis converted on just 5-of-15 attempts from the floor. Illinois State also held a significant advantage at the charity stripe, as the Redbirds went 21-of-27 from the free throw line while the Salukis were just 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
"What got us in trouble is that they scored 21 points at the free throw line," Stein said. "You can't spot someone 21 points."
Makenzie Silvey led SIU with 13 points and three steals while Abby Brockmeyer notched her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Link, who was thrust into the contest because of Brittney Patrick's early foul trouble, made the most of her extended minutes and scored six points to go along with an assist and a steal in 23 minutes off the bench.
The Salukis are on the road again on Sunday when they travel to Peoria, Ill. to take on the Bradley Braves. Tip-off from Renaissance Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
