The Salukis overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to force an extra session.
PEORIA, Ill. - Despite a furious fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team was unable to complete the rally, falling at at Bradley on Sunday, 58-53.
The Salukis move to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, while Bradley improves to 13-4 and 3-3 in the Valley. The win snaps SIU's eight-game win streak over the Braves and Southern has now lost four in a row.
"We put ourselves in this hole," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We have great teams in the Valley, and they are all too good to not show up against. We are doing too many things to beat ourselves. It would be nice to know how good we are if we stopped beating ourselves with fouls, not getting to the line and little things like that. Taking care of the ball, hitting the high percentage shots- its hard to know. We are going to keep fighting and trying to figure this thing out and we will be sure to get a group out there that will fight for every possession."
The Salukis struggled out of the gate as they connected on just two of their first 17 attempts from the field, including 0-for-8 from behind the arc, and trailed 15-4 after the first quarter. To make matters worse, three of Southern's five starters picked up their second fouls in the second quarter, forcing the Salukis to go to their bench much earlier than they had hoped. On top of that, frustration began to mount as Southern went a third-straight game without making a single trip to the free throw line in the first half.
The Salukis regrouped at the break and got to within seven after three quarters. The Braves scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and went ahead 41-30 with 7:45 to play. Southern would not go gently into the good night, as they roared back with a 13-2 run over the next 3:30 to tie the game at 43-all. Nicole Martin had six points during the run, while Celina VanHyfte chipped in four points and Brittney Patrick completed a three-point play that tied the game, 43-43 with 4:19 to play.
Southern got a defensive stop on the Braves' next possession and Martin gave SIU its first lead, 45-43 with 2:42 to play in regulation. After the Braves came back to take a 47-45 lead with 1:34 to play in regulation, Makenzie Silvey was fouled on the inbounds and calmly sank both free throws with :29 remaining to send the game to overtime.
Neither team could find the bucket much in overtime, but Bradley was able to get to the charity stripe, cashing in 6-of-6 at the stripe in the last five minutes to earn the win. The Salukis took their largest lead of the contest, 51-47, on a pair of free throws by Martin with 4:13 left on the clock but Braves went to the free throw line on back-to-back possessions to tie the contest at 51-all and outscored SIU. 7-2, from there to seal the win.
"We got back the lead with great execution and looking for our reads and timing," Stein said. "Then all the sudden we got back into rush mode. We are a work in progress. We're getting better at some things and I thought we had some good bench play again. We have to continue to have that and keep evolving."
Martin finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two steals to record her third double-double this season. Makenzie Silvey added 14 points, six boards, three steals and two assists in 43 minutes while VanHyfte scored 10 points and grabbed four boards off the bench. It marked the second time that VanHyfte has reached double figures this season, and the first time that she has done so in Valley play since Feb. 14, 2016.
