Five Salukis scored in double figures to help SIU improve to 7-1 at home on the season.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Five Salukis scored in double figures to help Southern Illinois run away from the Valparaiso Crusaders, 87-65, Friday night inside SIU Arena.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Salukis (9-8, 2-4 MVC), who snapped a four-game skid to win their third-straight over the Crusaders (5-13, 1-5 MVC). With the victory, Southern improved to 7-1 at home on the season.
"We knew we've been going through a rough skid recently, but we've been practicing well and knew we had to fight through it because it happens to a lot of teams," Makenzie Silvey said. "We knew we needed to come out with a lot of energy, which we did, and that allowed us to get out to a really good start and gave us a pretty good lead to start the game."
Southern had five scorers in double figures for the first time this season, led by 21 points from Silvey, who was 7-for-13 from the floor and added six rebounds, two steals and a block in 31 minutes. Kristen Nelson tallied 17 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc, while Nicole Martin chipped in 16 points and five boards.
Brittney Patrick came close to the program's first-ever triple-double, as she finished with 11 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Abby Brockmeyer was the fifth Saluki in double figures, as she added 11 points and six boards.
The Salukis defense set the tone early, as Southern turned Valpo over on two of its first three possessions to race out to a 10-0 lead with 7:10 to play in the first. Valparaiso got to within eight, 19-11 on a layup by Meredith Hamlet with 2:40 to play in the first, but SIU closed the period with seven-straight points from Martin to build a 26-11 lead.
"That was huge," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said of her team's fast start against Valpo. "We wanted to come out and be really aggressive and we wanted to go after it. We didn't want to relent at all and I felt like our kids, for the most part, did that."
The Salukis kept their foot on pedal and held at least a 12-point lead for the remainder of the game. Southern took its largest lead of the first half with 1:13 remaining in the second period on a layup by Silvey. SIU took its largest lead of the game, 59-30, midway through the third on a steal and lay-in by Patrick.
"With the losses our team has always come back with good energy, positive spirits and they have been working hard to get back into the swing of things," Stein said. "I was really impressed with our play and I thought we had great bench play. Defensively we had to shut some things down and we made good adjustments."
Southern's bench play was highlighted by Lauren Hartman's defensive efforts. Hartman came off the bench and drew the tough assignment of guarding Valpo's Addison Stoller. The Tremont, Ill. native was not only able to slow down Stoller, but she also notched season-highs in minutes (17), blocks (2) and steals (1).
"I told our team this- the key to our game today was Lauren Hartman," Stein said. "Her stats may not show it but she came in when (Stoller) was getting hot and Lauren shut her down and stalled her out. Not that Stoller didn't score after that, but Lauren stalled her out. (Stoller) was just going to the basket, going to the line and Lauren came in with a big defensive game. Her stats don't always show all that she did- she got a lot of deflections, got some blocks and made the right passes. She really helped us out today."
The Salukis won the glass, 38-to-28, and shot a season-best 54.5% (30-of-55) from the field, including a season-high 53.3% (8-of-15) from behind the arc. Southern also got to the free throw line a season-best 31 times- which marked just the third time in Stein's six seasons as head coach that Southern has gotten to the charity stripe 30-plus times.
"Im not sure our (free throw) percentage is what we want to be yet but it does help to get to the line 31 times," Stein said. "We didn't feel like they could guard us off the dribble and that we could take advantage of our bigs. I felt like we did those things. I felt like we had good passing to get the wide open shooter in the corner. Overall- a complete game."
SIU also tallied 21 assists, which marked the fourth time this season that Southern has dished out 20-plus assists, and turned the ball over just 11 times- it's fewest in a MVC game this season.
The Salukis return to action Sunday when they host Loyola for Sunday Funday. Tip-off against the Ramblers is slated for 2 p.m.
