SIU shot 59.3% from the field and scored a season-high 52 points in the second half of the win.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team picked up its second-straight win Sunday afternoon, as the Salukis pulled away in the second half to defeat the Loyola Ramblers, 74-63, Sunday afternoon inside SIU Arena.
The Salukis (10-8, 3-4 MVC) and the Ramblers (9-9, 3-4 MVC) were deadlocked at 22-all after 20 minutes of play, but Southern shot 59.3% from the floor in the second half and outscored Loyola, 23-14 in the third quarter to build a double-digit, fourth quarter lead it never relinquished.
"I felt like in the first half we were rushing stuff on offense but we played pretty hard defensively," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "In the second half, we put it all together. We had a lot better chemistry on the offensive end and definitely executed our plays better. We also got some good minutes from some kids off the bench that really helped us, specifically Payton McCallister."
The Salukis had four score in double figures, including McCallister off the bench. Nicole Martin led the way with her fourth double-double of the season. Martin finished with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go along with 10 boards. Abby Brockmeyer tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, while Makenzie Silvey scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
McCallister chipped in 10 points and three boards in 14 minutes of work. It was the fourth time that McCallister has reached double figures this season, and the first time she has done so since SIU's win over Hartford on Nov. 23, 2018.
"We just went into this game understanding what had to be done coming off of four losses," Martin said. "We were focused and knew what we needed to do."
SIU scored the first six points of the second half to take a 28-22 lead. Loyola got to within two, 29-27, but SIU countered with a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the game, 42-31 with 3:39 to play in the third quarter. The Ramblers got to within four, 35-31, but the Salukis again extended their lead to nine by the end of the period.
From there, Southern's lead grew to 16, 60-44, after a three-ball by McCallister with 3:13 to play. The Ramblers used a barrage of three-pointers from Janae Gonzales to get to within 10 (71-61) with :22 seconds to play, but that was as close as they could get.
Martin and Brockmeyer were a big reason why the Salukis were able to dominate the glass, out-rebounding the Ramblers, 42-to-26. Southern also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to Loyola's four.
I felt like we were able to hit the offensive boards a lot," Stein said. "I felt like we had a size advantage. They were really packing it in, so we knew we were going to have to work a lot harder but we did a good job of sneaking in there and getting some."
Southern's ball movement was also superb, as the Salukis dished out 17 assists on 25 field goals. Brittney Patrick accounted for nine of SIU's 17 assists against just one turnover. The junior point guard also added eight points and six rebounds.
Neither team came out particularly hot to start the contest. The two teams combined to shoot 2-of-15 from the floor through the first six minutes of play. Shots started to fall for both teams, and Celina VanHyfte's first three-pointer in over a year tied the contest, 10-all at the end of the first period.
Southern used an 8-2 run midway through the second to open up a five-point lead, 20-15, with 5:48 to play in the first half. The Ramblers closed on a 7-2 run of their own to knot the score at 22-all at the half.
SIU scored a season-high 52 points in the second half, including 29 points in the fourth quarter to open up a double-digit lead. With the win, Southern improved to 8-1 at home on the season.
The Salukis are back in action next weekend for the Missouri Valley Conference's Iowa swing. Southern opens play at Northern Iowa on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. before taking on first-place Drake on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
