CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Sophomore Makenzie Silvey poured in 20 points for the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team but it wasn't enough as the Northern Iowa Panthers pulled out a 65-53 win inside the McLeod Center.
The Salukis (10-9, 3-5 MVC) struggled to get in a rhythm against the Panthers (13-7, 6-2 MVC) as the home team held the Salukis to 37.7% (20-of-53) shooting, and SIU made just 20% (3-of-15) of its 3-point attempts. The pace of the contest was further complicated by a near constant barrage of whistles that saw three of SIU's starters pick up two fouls within the first 12 minutes of play and six total Salukis went into the half with at least two fouls. The two teams combined for 49 fouls, of which SIU was called for a season-high 30. It was the most fouls called on SIU in a game since Feb. 25, 2011.
Northern Iowa, on the other hand, took advantage of SIU's foul trouble and converted on 42.6% (20-of-47) of its attempts from the floor. The Panthers shot 47.8% (11-of-23) in the first half to build an eight point lead at the half.
Southern cut into their deficit early in the third quarter behind Silvey. She scored SIU's first five points of the second half to draw the visitors to within three, 31-28. UNI countered with a 14-2 run that gave the Panthers a 45-30 lead with 3:50 to play in the third.
SIU again got UNI's lead down to four on a jumper by Silvey and a free throw from Abby Brockmeyer with 8:11 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers responded with eight unanswered points to seal the win.
The Salukis were led by Silvey, who finished with 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. It marked the fifth time this season that the Glen Carbon, Ill. native has finished with 20-plus points and the eighth-straight game in which she has scored in double figures.
Brittney Patrick tied her career-best with seven rebounds and added three assists before fouling out in the game's final minutes. Kristen Nelson added eight points, three steals and two assists while Nicole Martin chipped in eight points and seven boards.
The Saluki bench produced several highlights as well. Lauren Hartman scored six points and grabbed six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench, while Celina VanHyfte finished with three points, five rebounds and three steals in 21 minutes of play.
UNI had three players finish in double-figures led by Ellie Howell's team-high 18 points. Mikaela Morgan added 12 points and Karli Rucker tallied 11 points.
SIU will next travel to Des Moines, Iowa on Feb. 3 to take on the Drake Bulldogs. Drake's 47-game conference winning streak was snapped Friday night after Missouri State left the Knapp Center with a 85-79 win. Tip-off between the Salukis and the Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
