CARBONDALE, Ill. — Grey Epps, a sophomore from Clarksville, Tennessee and member of the Saluki baseball team, was awarded the Mr. & Mrs. Thomas P. Wittmann Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Epps started 39 games for the Salukis as a true freshman last season.
"If a coach could have 30 athletes like Grey Epps, this would be the easiest job in the country," said head baseball coach Ken Henderson. "He is one of those rare individuals that just gets it and he is an absolute joy to coach."
Epps's visit to SIU helped prove that Carbondale was the right place for him.
"Not long after I visited SIU, I decided to verbally commit," said Epps. "I had such a great experience. I loved the campus, the facilities and the coaching staff."
In his freshman campaign, Epps hit .230 for the Salukis while recording 14 runs batted in (RBIs) with 19 runs scored. His resiliency showed after starting the season 4-for-45 at the plate. He batted .298 in the remainder of the season while recording his first collegiate home run on March 30 against Illinois State.
"Grey is so coachable, driven and passionate that I have no doubt he will continue to be successful in whatever direction life takes him," said Henderson. "He strives to be the best version of himself each and every day. I couldn't be happier for such a deserving individual to receive this scholarship."
The Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Wittmann scholarship endowment is in honor of Pete's father, William Wittmann. In recognition of his support and appreciation for SIU and SIU Athletics, Pete, a former student-athlete, contributed money to assist current and future student-athletes.
"I am very appreciative of this scholarship and I can't thank Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Wittmann enough for their generosity," said Epps. "I have the opportunity to live out my dream and it's because of supporters like them."
