CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced on Friday that the program has signed Andrew Thornton, a top-50 ranked amateur player in Scotland, according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Thornton, who will be a freshman at SIU in 2019-20, is a member of the Scotland Boys Home Internationals team and posted a 72.86 scoring average in 2018. Last year, he was named the Perth & Kinkross Junior Player of the Year, won the Paul Lawrie Junior Jug and recorded a top-25 finish in the Scottish Men's Amateur.
Fetcho said Thornton stands 6-foot-4 and has a swing speed close to 120 miles per hour.
"Andrew possesses all of the characteristics we look for in a member of our program and we're excited to welcome him to the Saluki family," Fetcho said. "We feel once he gets immersed in our culture and environment, he is going to continue to improve as a player. His best golf is still in front of him and we feel he has the talent and attributes to play at a very high level."
Fetcho continued, "in addition to being a great player, Andrew is also a great student and plans to study engineering, which shows his skill level in the classroom. We are pleased to add another well-rounded individual to our program."
