CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Salukis (4-8-1 overall) will head north for a match against the Eastern Illinois University Panthers on Thursday at 3 p.m.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Salukis are coming off of a 2-0 loss against the Southeast Missouri University Redhawks on Sunday. SIU battled with the Redhawks despite trailing 1-0 for a majority of the contest but gave up a second SEMO goal with three minutes to play to put it out of reach.
2. SCOUTING EIU: The Panthers are coming off back-to-back wins to improve to 3-7-1 on the season. Leading the team in scoring is a trio of players in Sarah DeWolf, Nicoletta Anuci and Lexi Ketterhagen with two goals apiece. In goal, Sara Teteak has played all possible minutes (1,204:28) and has collected 73 saves with 19 goals allowed.
As a team, the Panthers are one of the more accurate teams the Salukis have faced this season as EIU's shot accuracy ranks 37th in NCAA DI. Additionally, the Panthers hold top-100 rankings in penalty kicks (1, T-1st), saves per game (6.64, 20th), fouls per game (7.18, 37th) and save percentage (79%, 97th).
The Panthers are coached by Jake Plant, who is in his second season with EIU. Last year, Plant coached the Panthers to a 6-8-6 overall finish, including going 4-3-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play. His team's third place finish in the OVC in 2018 was the highest for the program since 2006.
3. SALUKI STATS: Freshman forward Liz Brechtel leads the Salukis in goals with three, while fellow classmate Emma Spotak trails with two. Andrea Rodriguez and Kaitlin DuCharme share the team lead in assists with two each, while Brechtel leads the team in overall points with six. As a team, the Salukis have recorded 125 shots with 57 coming on goal (46%).
In goal, freshman Dariana Mihalache has recorded 893 minutes in net and has recorded two wins. Her 73 saves are tied for 11th in the country with EIU's Teteak, while her 5.62 saves per game is good for 46th. Fellow freshman Maddy Alaluf has seen the second-most time in net (152 minutes) and has seen success with 10 saves and a 1-0 record.
4. WHAT'S ON TAP: Following the conclusion of Thursday's match, the Salukis will return home on Oct. 18 to face SIU before heading back on the road to face Dartmouth on Oct. 22. The regular season comes to a close the following week with a home finale against California Baptist University on Nov. 2.
