CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University softball team has added catcher Danyelle Eilers to the team's 2020 signing class, head coach Kerri Blaylock announced Tuesday.
Eilers, a sophomore at nearby John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill., slashed .350/.398/.487 as a freshman with five extra base hits and 27 runs batted in. This past fall, Eilers was one of three players to reach base against the Salukis in SIU's 8-0 win on Sept. 15.
The Ava, Ill. native played her prep ball at Trico High School, where she was a three-time All-State honoree and helped the Pioneers reach the state semifinals as a sophomore. Trico also won the West Division of the Black Diamond Conference in each of her four seasons. Following her senior season, Eilers was selected to play in the inaugural Southern Illinois Select All-Star Softball game alongside current Salukis Nicole Johnson and Tori Schullian. Eilers played her travel ball for the Illinois Force, the same travel team that Johnson, Schullian and Sarah Harness played for.
"We have watched Danyelle for a long time," Blaylock said. "She is very solid behind the plate and also hits the ball well. She fits in completely with our team and our culture. We are very excited that she decided to stay close to home and be a Saluki."
