CARBONDALE, Ill. — In addition to buying tickets, Saluki fans have more opportunities than ever to invest in the future success of Saluki Athletics, with the creation of several new funds designed to enhance specific areas of the student-athlete experience at SIU.
Most fans are familiar with the Saluki Athletic Scholarship Fund, the annual fund that helps offset the cost of scholarships, but new Director of Athletics Liz Jarnigan is encouraging end-of-the-year giving to several lesser known funds, as well as some new opportunities.
"As SIU works to support the success of our student-athletes in competition, the classroom and the community, the collective support of many can make a positive impact on the rising costs associated with that success," Jarnigan said.
Each of the department's teams has its own Sport-Specific Giving fund, so that fans and alums can directly support individual teams. These donations help supplement team's budgets and give coaches discretionary dollars to make purchases they feel can elevate their programs.
Three new funds are aimed at direct support for student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Well-Being fund helps athletes reach their peak performance. For example, donations to this fund help feed all student-athletes at the department's Fueling Station — an on-site cafeteria stocked with items selected by a nutritionist. The fund also helps supply materials for the Troutt Wittmann Academic and Training Center, where student-athletes study and train.
The Women's Initiatives fund directly supports female student-athletes with programs tailored to the needs of women. "WIN" will provide opportunities for female student-athletes to plan and prepare for life after college, including career training and networking opportunities.
The AD's Excellence fund allows Jarnigan to finance projects beyond those that are covered by the department's general budget. For example, new branding throughout the facility and updated graphics for team locker rooms were paid for from this fund. The AD's Excellence Fund gives Jarnigan the flexibility to make the entire SIU Athletics experience better for both fans and student-athletes.
Jarnigan announced that long-time supporter Greg Cook, the CEO of Cook Portable Warehouses, has made a lead gift to be split between the funds.
"Every donation, large or small, is meaningful and vital to ensure that all of our athletics programs reach national competitive prominence," Jarnigan said. "Together, our donors, alumni and fans can help make that happen."
Donations to any of these funds can be made through the University's secure website (SIUSalukis.com/Donate) or by contacting a member of the Development staff at 618-453-3148.
