OPENING TIP
- SIU and Indiana State meet on Monday night in the MVC opener for both schools. The game will be televised regionally on the MVC TV Network. [Fox Sports Midwest, NBC Sports Chicago, Fox Sports Kansas City, Fox Sports Indiana and ESPN+ or ESPN3 (subject to blackout)]
- The Salukis have won eight-straight games over Indiana State, including four-straight games in Terre Haute. (Series record streaks: 10 wins overall [SIU from 2002-06] // 7 road wins [SIU 2001-07])
- The Sycamores are undefeated at home (4-0) and SIU is searching for its first true road win of the season (0-4). [SIU has one win away from home -- a neutral-site win over UTSA at Kissimmee, Fla.]
- SIU leads the MVC in scoring defense (60.8) and ranks 25th nationally in scoring defense. Last time out, SIU held SEMO to 45 points -- the best defensive scoring effort for SIU since 2016 (W, 65-44 at Bradley). The game marked just the fifth time in the last 13 years that SIU held an opponent to 45 points or fewer.
- SIU is allowing opponents to shoot just 41.1% from the field (3rd in MVC) and 29.5% from the 3-point line (2nd in MVC). SIU has held six of 13 opponents under 40% shooting this season and 12 of 13 under 50%.Â
- Marcus Domask is one of only five freshmen in the nation averaging at least 14 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Domask leads all MVC freshmen in scoring, rebounding and assists.
- SIU star senior guard Aaron Cook Jr. has missed the last seven games with a broken hand suffered at Murray State (Nov. 19). He is day-to-day with the injury. The Salukis are 4-3 without Cook, with true freshman Lance Jones stepping into his starting role.Â
Dawg Bites: SIU has won three of its last four MVC openers ... SIU has won 24-straight games when it scores 75+, dating back to the 2016-17 season ... SIU is 6-0 when it has 15+ assists and 0-7 when it has 14 or fewer assists.
YOUNG SALUKIS THRIVING
- SIU's freshmen and sophomores begun to thrive at the end of non-conference play. In the last two games, SIU underclassmen have accounted for 71% of the team's scoring, and the top four scorers on those two games were underclassmen.Â
- Marcus Domask leads all MVC freshmen in scoring, rebounding and assists. Lance Jones ranks second in assists, and Trent Brown ranks second in steals.Â
- Redshirt freshman Karrington Davis, who missed the last two seasons with injuries, has slowly worked his way back from injury and averaged 10.0 points over the last three games (on 71% shooting).Â
- All five of SIU's freshmen have scored in double-figures at least once this year.Â
- Lance Jones, who had never played point guard in his life prior to Aaron Cook Jr.'s injury, stepped into SIU's starting PG role and averaged 7.7 points and 4.0 assists in seven games since Cook's injury.
