CARBONDALE, Ill. — Brad Harrison, a junior from O'Fallon and member of the Saluki baseball team, received the Roger Spear Memorial Fund Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Harrison started in 14 games on the mound for the Salukis last season.
"Brad's success, both on and off of the field, is not by accident," said head baseball coach Ken Henderson. "He is an outstanding student, heavily involved in the community and a tremendous ballplayer. He has continued to do everything that we ask of him and it has paid off so far."
It didn't take Harrison long to find out that Carbondale was the right place for him.
"I committed to SIU as a sophomore in high school," said Harrison. "From the moment I stepped on the campus, I knew that this was home."
Last season, Harrison finished fourth in the MVC in strikeouts with 75. He also became the first SIU player since 2005 to earn three MVC Pitcher of the Week awards in one season. Not only did Harrison end the season as SIU's number two starting pitcher, he also made 21 plate appearances as a batter and hit .250 with a .417 on-base percentage.
"Brad really embraces his role on our team and has risen to the occasion time and time again," said Henderson. "He understands the commitment required to be a student-athlete and all that encompasses. He is an exceptional role model for future Salukis."
Harrison was awarded the Roger Spear Memorial scholarship. Roger E. Spear participated in football, basketball and baseball at SIU. His education and his baseball professional dreams were interrupted by World War II when he served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Southern Illinois in 1948. Upon graduation from SIU, Spear served as the SIU Alumni Association President and was on the SIU Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Although he passed away in 1990, the SIU baseball batting cages and this endowed scholarship were given in his memory by his wife Eileen.
"Receiving this scholarship is just one of the many reasons why it's so great to be a Saluki," said Harrison. "Being a Saluki is something that I've been proud of since the day I committed and is something I will be proud of for the rest of my life."
