TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois men's basketball program jumped out to a 17-point first-half lead and cruised to a 79-57 win at Indiana State on Saturday afternoon in the Hullman Center. Armon Fletcher, Sean Lloyd Jr., and Kavion Pippen all scored 20+ points for the Salukis in the win.
"That's about as good as we can play as far as energy and effort," SIU head coach Barry Hinson said. "I felt like our backs were up against the wall today. I told them this was a Super Bowl game for us, and every game the rest of the way will be a Super Bowl."
SIU (14-13, 7-7 MVC) jumped out to a 9-2 lead and pushed the advantage to double-figures in the game's opening nine minutes. The Sycamores (13-13, 5-9 MVC) cut the SIU lead to nine points on five separate occasions in the second half; but each time, SIU answered to push the lead back to double-figures and was never truly threatened. The win was SIU's largest margin of victory in an MVC game in the Hinson era.
Pippen dominated, adding four blocks, four rebounds and four assists to his 21 points. Lloyd was dominant at both ends, holding Indiana State leading scorer Tyreke Key to eight points on 3-of-13 shooting. Key came into the game among the Missouri Valley leaders in free throw attempts, but he only got to the line for three free throws against Lloyd; and on the other end, Lloyd got to the line nine times, knocking down 8-of-9 from the stripe. SIU was 15-for-16 from the free throw line in the game.
While Fletcher, Pippen, and Lloyd combined for 62 points, Hinson was quick to praise the play of guards Aaron Cook and Eric McGill. Cook had seven assists and McGill had five. Cook also had the primary defensive assignment on high-scoring Sycamore guard Jordan Barnes and limited Barnes to 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. SIU was plus-24 with McGill on the floor, a game high.
"I thought the two most impactful players had six points in Eric McGill and Aaron Cook," Hinson said. "They impacted the game as much as anyone. Everyone wants to point to the guys that scored, but these guys had 12 assists and 2 turnovers between the two of them. That's phenomenal. What they did defensively, and what Sean Lloyd did defensively, I thought was a huge key."
While SIU was outstanding on the offensive end, shooting 68 percent in the first half and 54 percent for the game, the Salukis were maybe even better on defense, holding the Sycamores to 33 percent for the game. SIU also owned the glass, outrebounding Indiana State by 10.
"It was everything we talked about: get stops, get stops, get stops," Hinson said. "Lose yourself into the game defensively. Tonight, that's what we did."
SIU has won eight-straight games over Indiana State and swept the regular season series for a fourth-straight season.
The Salukis have won four of their last six games heading into Wednesday's game at Valparaiso. Tip-off at Valparaiso is set for 7 p.m.
