The Southern Illinois baseball team travels to Belmont on Wednesday for their first mid-week game of the 2019 season. The game will mark the end of a season-opening six-game road stretch for SIU. Following the road matchup, Southern will play eight of its next 10 games at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The SIU-Belmont game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and live stats will be available at SIUSalukis.com/Baseball/Schedule. Mason Hiser will make his first start of the season for the Salukis.Â
The mid-week matchup between SIU and Belmont was originally scheduled for Feb. 19, but moved forward a week due to inclement weather in Nashville.Â

AROUND THE HORN

- Mason Hiser will make his sixth career start and first appearance since March 20 against SIUE. The junior started five games last season before suffering a season-ending injury in 2018.Â
- SIU newcomer Philip Archer has reached base in all five games and leads the team with a .333 on-base percentage.Â
- Dylan Givens tops the Missouri Valley Conference in innings pitched (13.1)and ranks seventh in earned run average (1.35). In his last outing at Memphis, he pitched eight innings (5 H, 0 ER, 3 K) to earn his first victory of the season.Â
- Trey McDaniel leads the MVC with two saves. Through two appearances, he has struck out three, while allowing no runs on no hits.Â
- The Salukis are 8-for-11 on stolen base attempts this season. Addison Fugitt, Nikola Vasic and Will LaRue each have two stolen bases for Southern.Â
MID-WEEK SUCCESS
- Southern caught fire in mid-week action last season. The Salukis won four-straight mid-week games to open the season and went 10-3 overall. The offense averaged over seven runs per game over the 13-game span and the pitching staff produced three shutouts.Â
