The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in third place at the FAU Spring Championship for its best finish of the spring season to date. The Salukis had their sixth-best 54-hole team score of all time this weekend (849), including their third-best 36-hole team score, and their second-best 18-hole team score.
"I said yesterday that my goal was to get all six guys to shoot under par today," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "We got four guys under par and one even with par. I think that's just a testament to how deep our team is and how much talent we have. I think it was just a really great week for us."
Senior Peyton Wilhoit (-6) had his best finish of the year, tying for fifth place with a score of 208. Freshman Matthis Besard (-5) finished tied for eighth place with a score of 209. Senior Luke Gannon (-1) finished tied for 21st place with a score of 215. Senior Hunter York (+2) tied for 38th and junior Frankie Thomas (+4) tied for 42nd. Freshman Vikar Jonasson (+5) competed as an individual and tied for 48th.
"In terms of playing, we minimized mistakes greatly. We made a lot of birdies. Our body language was much better. Our control of our emotions was much better," said Fetcho. "I think that looking at the whole tournament, every hole, every player, this was the best I've seen us play. That excites me as a coach because we are in April. Our conference championship is just around the corner."
The SIU Men's Golf team heads back to Carbondale to prepare for the Tiger Invitational on April 8-9th in Columbia, Missouri hosted by the University of Missouri.
