Braves blank SIU in series opener

PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley senior pitcher Mitch Janssen pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Braves to an 8-0 decision over Southern Illinois on Friday night at Dozer Park. The teams will conclude the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Bradley (20-10, 1-3 MVC) came into the game with the nation's best ERA and lowered it further after shutting out SIU (17-13, 1-3 MVC). Janssen allowed just three hits--two doubles-- but didn't allow any Salukis to advance farther than second base. Ian Walters and Addison Fugitt hit doubles, and Nikola Vasic hit a ninth-inning single, but that was it for SIU's offense. SIU failed to steal a base for the first time in 18 games.Â
The Braves scored a run in the first and then blew the game open with a four-run third inning. SIU committed a two-out error that allowed a run to score, and then Bradley's Andy Shadid made it really hurt by following it with a three-run homer. Bradley followed the four unearned runs in the third inning with three earned runs in the fourth to set the final score at 8-0.Â
"We weren't ready to play, and we weren't competitive in any area of the game," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "When you're not ready to play in this league, that's what happens."Â
SIU freshman Matthew Steidl was outstanding in relief. After SIU got behind 8-0, Steidl came in and pitched four shutout innings, increasing his scoreless inning streak to nine innings over his last two appearances.Â
"That's the one bright spot," Henderson said. "We had a freshman out there who competed harder that anybody on the team today. That's tough to come into an 8-0 ballgame, but he was ready. He threw four shutout innings and did a lot of good things for this team. We're going to turn around and play 18 innings tomorrow; when your starter is out after four innings, you need someone to step up. He did that. I'm unbelievably proud of him and his effort."
Due to Sunday's forecast, the teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and will not play on Sunday, marking the fifth weekend in 2019 that weather will force a doubleheader.Â
"We need to find a way to get it turned around and ready to go tomorrow, and I'm sure we will," Henderson said. "This was the first time all year that I didn't think we were ready to compete when the first pitch was thrown, so I see no reason why we won't be ready to go tomorrow."
