PEORIA, Ill. - The Bradley baseball team swept a doubleheader against Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park. The Braves won the first game 14-4 in seven innings before winning the series finale 7-1.
SIU's pitching staff struggled with control in the doubleheader, walking 19 and hitting six over the two games. Bradley (22-10, 3-3 MVC) took advantage in the first game with home runs by Luke Shadid, Andy Shadid, and Dan Bolt. In the second game, SIU held Bradley to just four hits, but Bradley scored seven runs. In the second inning, three-straight hit batsmen gave Bradley a two-run inning after a single scored a pair of the HBPs. Over the third and fourth innings, SIU walked Braves three times with the bases loaded to put the game out of reach.Â
"The story of the day and the story of the weekend starts on the bump--too many free passes," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "When you give up 25 or 26 free passes in a doubleheader, that's unimaginable. You're not going to beat anybody, let alone a good team like Bradley, when you do that. That's where it starts."Â
In the opener, the Braves jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning, but SIU answered right back with a four-run second inning. J.T. Weber, Philip Archer and Grey Epps all singled to load the bases with no outs. Addison Fugitt hit a two-run single and Will LaRue followed with a two-run double.Â
Bradley re-took the lead with a two-run homer in the third inning, and a pair of unearned runs in the fifth gave Bradley a 7-4 lead. The Braves scored five in the sixth and two more in the seventh to end the game early with a run-rule 14-4 win.Â
"You have to put it behind you," Henderson said. "We didn't do anything well. We knew it was going to be a challenge coming in on the road. They pitch it extremely well and weren't going to give us anything; we were going to have to earn it. In order to do that, we have to pitch and play defense, and we didn't do that."
Bradley put the series finale out of reach early, scoring two in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead. Epps led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on a groundout. Justin Yeager (2.1 IP, 0H, 0R), Matt DeSomer (1.0 IP, 0H, 0R) and Trey McDaniel (1.0 IP, 0H, 0R) all pitched well to keep SIU within striking distance. The Salukis had base runners in every inning down the stretch, but couldn't get any of them across after Epps.
"I thought our effort was much better today," Henderson said. "I knew we would show up with energy and effort; we just didn't play well enough. We didn't execute and didn't make plays."
Southern Illinois concludes the five-game road swing with a 4 p.m. game at Austin Peay on Tuesday evening. The Salukis host Illinois State next weekend at Itchy Jones Stadium.Â
