The Southern Illinois University track and field program held their own against some of the top collegiate programs in the country on day two of the 52nd annual Tennessee Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee. Southern tallied three top-10 school marks Friday and notched numerous season- and personal-bests.
"I thought today went great," Director of track and field/cross country Rosalind Joseph said. "Coming off a bye week and a hard week of training, I thought every event group performed really well. On top of the top-10 school marks, we had a lot of season- and personal-bests. Everyone is starting to get comfortable with competition and I think we are honing in on achieving our conference goals."
Two of SIU's top-10 school marks came in the hurdles while the third came in women's 5K.
Theo Phipps ran a personal-best 14.14 to take sixth in the 110m hurdles. It tied Phipps with Bob Green's 1963 mark for the 10th-best time in school history. On the women's side, Savannah Long clocked a personal-best in the 400m hurdles as she ran 1:00.40 to also take sixth. It is the 10th-best time in school history and gives Long her first top-10 school mark of her collegiate career.
Phipps day wasn't done, as he recorded a season-best in the long jump at 23'-0" (7.01m) to place 13th.
In the distance races, Megan Krolak was the runner up in the women's college 5K race. Krolak cut more than 12 seconds off her previous-best time at 17.15.11. It was the 10th-fastest 5K time in school history, and the fastest outdoor 5K time by a Saluki since 2014. Reid Parsons, meanwhile, cut more than 10 seconds off his previous personal-best in the 10K. Parsons clocked a time of 15:10.46 to finish 11th out of 30 runners.
A pair of top-3 finishes highlighted Southern's day in the circle. Adam Kessler took third in the shot put and was second among collegiate competitors. Kessler threw 63'-2.75" (19.26m) on his third attempt while Shauniece O'Neal finished third in the hammer throw. O'Neal recorded her third-straight mark over 200-feet, as she threw 202'-2" (61.63m) on her fifth attempt.
In the 800m run, Canoy Tyree ran a personal-best 1:51.45 to finish eighth. Tyree ran nearly identical 400m splits- as he ran the first lap in 55.63 and the second in 55.83. Brandon Schnitker also notched a PR in the event.
In the sprints, Bri'Anna Branch led the way after she ran 23.25 to finish sixth in the 200-meter dash invitational race. In the college race, Genesis Ewell set a PR with her 200m time of 24.36 to place seventh.
In the pole vault, Kyle Zeinemann was the runner-up after he cleared 16-feet for the first time in his career. The sophomore vaulter cleared a personal-best 16'-0.75" (4.90m) on his first attempt at the height.
At the high jump pit, McKenzie Krich and Madison Meyer both cleared 5'-4.25" (1.63m). For Krich, that clearance was a personal-best while Meyer's mark was a season-best.
Over at the steeplechase, Theo Hassim clocked a collegiate-best time of 9:46.54 to finish third out of eight competitors.
Southern will kick off the final day of competition at the Tennessee Relays beginning tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the women's discus competition.
