CARBONDALE, Ill. – Alexis Roberson, a junior from Jefferson City, Missouri and member of the Track & Field team, received the Boydston Legacy Athletic Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic school year. Roberson was a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete in the 2017-18 academic year and three-time MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
"Alexis is a quiet competitor," said director of track and field Rosalind Joseph. "She always has a pleasant disposition and great attitude about practice. She pays attention to the details and is a great team player."
Roberson came to love SIU during her recruitment process.
"I had never heard of SIU when coach Lambert came and recruited me," said Roberson. "As soon as I set foot on campus, I knew I wanted to make this place my next home."
Alexis had the pleasure of being part of the 6th nationally ranked team for throwers during the 2017-2018 season. During this season, Roberson continues to shine and bring home honors. She has been ranked as high as second in the MVC.
"I have placed in the top 8 in the MVC 5 times in the past 2 years at the championships," said Roberson.
She continued to keep that tradition and finished third with her toss of 67'-5" (20.55m) at the MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships during the 2018-2019 season. Her incredible performance at the championships marked the eighth time that Roberson has thrown 67-plus feet this year and helped her earn her first All-MVC honor.
After working as a professor in health education at the University of Mississippi, Donald "Doc" Boydston came to SIU in 1955 to establish SIU's department of health education. Boydston guided the University's nationally recognized health education department for 33 years, along with the department's graduate program. In 1957, Boydston became the Athletic Director and helped transform Saluki Athletics from small-college status into a Division I program. Among his many accomplishments, Boydston was on the planning committee for SIU Arena, which opened in 1964. During the fifteen-year Boydston era, SIU won twelve national championships in six different men's sports and thirteen teams finished as runner-ups for national titles. In 2010, the spectacular 50,000-square foot facility that houses the Saluki football and basketball teams opened and was named in honor of former Athletic Director Donald N. "Doc" Boydston.
