Men's Golf takes 7th place at Missouri Tiger Invitational
04/09/2019 | 8:45:00 | Men's Golf
The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished the Missouri Tiger Invitational 13 strokes under par and in seventh place out of 15 teams. In a closely contested tournament, the Salukis were just six strokes shy of third-place Missouri. TCU won the tournament at 40 strokes under par.
"I think that shows the importance of what one shot is and what getting one shot better truly means," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho, noting his team finished one stroke out of sixth place. "If we find ways to just get one shot better for each guy, then we have a different way to look at the event in terms of where we finish. As a team we're disappointed, we didn't come here to finish in seventh. Individually, we had some really good things happen."
Senior Luke Gannon (-6) finished tied for 11th place after recording a two-under par in the final round. Today marked six straight rounds for the senior from Kansas that he's been at or under par. Senior Peyton Wilhoit (-3) shot three under par today and tied for 26th place with a total score of 213 for the three rounds. Senior Hunter York (-1) tied for 31st place after his career record-breaking round of 65 yesterday. Frankie Thomas (+6) bounced back from a first-round 78 to shoot even par the next two rounds, and freshman Matthis Besard (+3) tied for 41st place.
"If you look at the total team effort, we needed all five guys to pull through at one point throughout the tournament. Guys stepped up when it was needed," said Fetcho. "I think that shows the depth of the team when they're capable to shoot at par or better. I think we proved that last week and again this week."
The team will spend one day in Carbondale before leaving on Thursday for the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational that takes place Saturday, April 13th and Sunday, April 14th in West Lafayette, Indiana.
