CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois men's golf coach Justin Fetcho announced the program's 2019-2020 schedule today, which will feature 12 out-of-state tournaments in four different time zones against several of the top collegiate teams in the country.
SIU is coming off a historic season where they won its second-ever MVC Championship and finished 10th overall at the Louisville NCAA Regional. The Salukis return six members from the championship-winning squad and have once again drafted an incredibly competitive schedule that aided to last year's success.
"We tell recruits and our current players that you are going to have the opportunity to compete against some of the best players and best teams in the country and I believe this schedule backs up that statement," SIU head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We are playing in 12 different states, so we will get a chance to experience different climates, conditions and time zones. I believe all of that helps prepare you for the NCAA postseason because you could be shipped anywhere in the country."
The Salukis are set to compete in six tournaments during the fall, the program's most since the 2012-13 season. SIU will open the 2019-2020 campaign at the Murray State Racer Invitational (Sept. 8-9), and continue with the UAB Graeme McDowell Invitational (Sept. 23-24), the Cincinnati Bearcat Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), the NC State Wolfpack Intercollegiate and the Little Rock Invitational (Oct. 21-22). SIU will close the fall season with a trip to the Hawaii Ka'anapali Classic Invitational (Nov. 1-3) for the second-straight year.
The Salukis begin the spring portion of their schedule at the Florida State Seminole Intercollegiate (Feb. 22-23). SIU will then compete in three March contests at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (Mar. 7-8), the Louisiana Classics (Mar. 15-16) and the Craft Farms Intercollegiate (Mar. 30-31).
Southern closes out the regular season with trips to Purdue and Iowa for the Boilermaker Invitational (Apr. 11-12) and Hawkeye Invitational (Apr. 18-19).
The postseason push starts with the MVC Championships (Apr. 27-28) in Flossmoor, Ill., where SIU will look to defend the Valley crown and win their third title in five years. NCAA Regional competition will last from May 17-20, while the NCAA Championships will take place in Scottsdale, Ariz. from May 29 to June 3.
"This schedule gives us the ability to experience a part of the country that we may have to play in when NCAA Regionals are announced," Fetcho said. "I am very excited with the way the schedule came together this year and am looking forward to going to some familiar places and some new ones as well."
