Fans also are encouraged to donate online, through a per sack pledge or a one-time “Sack Hunger” donation.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Saluki Athletics and its multimedia rightsholder, Saluki Sports Properties, announced today a new, two-year relationship with Moreland/Bishop McDonald's.
The centerpiece of the partnership is a community-wide initiative to "Sack Hunger" by helping feed at-risk children throughout Southern Illinois. Moreland/Bishop McDonald's is committing $40 to "Sack Hunger" for each defensive sack recorded by the Salukis during the 2019 football season, both home and away games.
Fans also are encouraged to donate online, through a per sack pledge or a one-time "Sack Hunger" donation via the secure website. In addition, fans can donate non-perishable food items in the designated drop boxes located at each of the 14 McDonald's locations throughout Southern Illinois that are owned and operated by Moreland/Bishop. The "Sack Hunger" initiative kicks off on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and Owner/Operator and longtime Saluki supporter Stephanie Bishop encourages the community and Saluki fans to join in and participate.
"Our families have had the privilege of serving this community for 40 years, and we consider it an honor to partner with Southern Illinois Athletics to 'Sack Hunger' and help children in our own community and region," said Bishop. "It's our hope that as many fans and those within the community who hear about this will join us through either a monetary donation or with providing food items. Everything helps, and together we can help these children."
The "Sack Hunger" initiative marks a first-of-a-kind for Southern Illinois University. At the end of football season, SIU Athletics and Moreland/Bishop McDonald's will present the total amount donated to Gum Drops, a local non-profit organization that focuses on providing food assistance to at-risk children throughout Southern Illinois. Gum Drops will also receive the various food items donated throughout the season for immediate use in fall food deliveries.
"We're thrilled to be the beneficiary of the first-ever 'Sack Hunger' initiative and appreciate in advance the generosity of Moreland/Bishop McDonald's, SIU, fans, and those in the community who participate this season," said Amy Simpson CEO of Gum Drops. "I think it's still surprising to people how many children in the immediate area and region qualify for food assistance, and this program will make a tremendous impact. We want to thank everyone who will play a part in helping these kids."
"We are excited to partner with McDonald's and Gum Drops of Southern Illinois on this very important cause," said SIU Director of Athletics Jerry Kill. "We need to make sure our youth are fed and make sure they have the proper nutrition every day. Saluki fans across Southern Illinois and our region I encourage you to help us support this great cause."
Gum Drops, based in Carterville, provides weekend meals to low-income children at 47 schools. The program is volunteer-run and relies on donations from individuals and organizations in order to operate.
Saluki Sports Properties, which solely represents Southern Illinois Athletics, is the locally based Learfield IMG College team that oversees the Moreland/Bishop McDonald's "Sack Hunger" initiative on behalf of the university.
