LITTLE ROCK INVITATIONAL
CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team is headed to Little Rock, Ark., to partake in the Little Rock Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The 54-hole tournament will take place from Oct. 19-20 (Monday-Tuesday) at the par 72, 7,326-yard Chenal Country Club.
The first 36 holes will kick off on Monday, with the final 18 coming on Tuesday. Both days will feature a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event will be a 6-score-4 tournament, with teams playing together in daily groupings. Live scoring for the tournament will be available via GolfStat.
"We're excited and looking forward to the opportunity to compete again this fall," said Coach Eric Gilpen. "We had a great couple of days of practice and look to build off of the momentum we had in the final round at Arkansas State."
The Salukis are one of 14 teams set to compete at the invite. Three teams in the field sit in the top-100 of the latest golfstat.com rankings. Fellow Missouri Valley Conference opponent Missouri State will join the Salukis in the field for the second-straight week.Â
The Salukis six-man lineup will include Tom Cleaton, Justin Wingerter, Markus Wilhelmsen, Matthis Besard, Josh Mackin and Birgir Magnusson. Cleaton, Wingerter, Besard, Mackin and Magnusson all competed in last week's Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate, while Wilhelmsen will be making his season debut.Â
At last week's Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate, Southern Illinois finished eighth out of the 10-team field. Cleaton led the Salukis in the individual rankings, as the junior tied 20th overall (75-76-71 = 222). Wingerter and Riley Klingelberg were the next-closest Salukis, as the pair tied 33rd and finished 11-over par (227).Â
"We need to play with a strong mentality this week," said Gilpen. "Play from strength, be disciplined and believe in our capabilities. We've put in the work and preparation, but now it's time to execute."
